Landmark 22 (Citizen Science)
Grade 7 and 8 students at three local schools participated in GreenUP’s Urban Forest Program, which included citizen science and action components. First, students practiced identification of local trees then used those skills to complete a tree inventory of their schoolyards. The students completed an inventory of 163 trees! Second, the students recorded their data on the myTree iTree tool, helping them to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide and pollution trees removes from the air, as well as the amount of stormwater run-off they can help mitigate. Finally, their analysis of the local forest provided them with the information needed to select new tree species to plant at their school. Nine medium stature trees were planted.
