Great Spruce

Landmark 7 (Books, Songs, Games Weekly)

We read The Great Spruce by John Duvall, in which a young boy finds a way to save his favourite tree, a spruce tree. The students were invited to collect three different evergreens that were growing around were they live and we did an evergreen investigation. What do they look like? Do they have needles or scales? What do they smell like? (“So nice!”) We did some experiments with evergreen cones. Do they float or sink? What happens when they are wet and when they are dry? We also sprinkled baking soda on them and glitter, then dropped vinegar on top with an eye dropper to see what happened.
