The Science of Plants

Landmark 5 (Garden/Care for Animal)

Over the past week during our virtual learning, students have been learning all about gardening, planting, and the needs of plants. We have been conducting several experiments learning and making predictions about what might happen in the natural world around us. One of the science experiments we did together virtually was with a pinecone in water. We wondered what happens to a pine cone when we place it in cold and warm water. We were able to make predictions, observe, and discovered that the pine cones close when they are wet. We introduced the students to the juicy word, “hygroscopic” and were able to demonstrate to them first hand the meaning of this new juicy word. Students also have been encouraged to share their planting, gardening, and experiments virtually and through pictures on our classroom page. We are currently conducting a carrot top in water experiment and celery in food colouring experiment. Through our celery experiment students are beginning to understand how nutrients travel through plants. We will continue our investigations and wonderings on our plant experiments in order to gain a greater understanding of the natural world around us.
