Investigating Acorns

Landmark 6 (Play in Nature a Full Hour)

During our outdoor activity times, many students have been collecting things, playing with them, and bringing them to our nature basket inside for further investigation. What are these little brown, smooth things with bumpy tops? Some of the children recognized them as acorns! And then we noticed that they came from the huge oak tree, whose branches overhang into our yard. We also discovered little creatures inside the acorns. With a bit of research, we learned that they are the larvae of the acorn weevil. Wow!
