Outdoor Ed

Landmark 12 (Nearby Plants and Animals)

My class voted to have an “Outdoor Ed.” day as a reward for filling their gem jar! We began the day by doing some outdoor probability math. Before we headed out with magnifying glasses, we made predictions about what we would see, hear, smell, feel in our school yard (animals, tracks, plants etc.). While outside, we explored our school yard and kept track of what we saw. We saw a vole, lots of birds, rabbit poop and tracks, sumac and many other different plants. We also took pictures of our natural environment and used the pictures to inspire us to create 3D nature art scenes out of clay. Students created scenes inspired by what they saw and other nature art including ponds with ducks, rabbits and snakes. We then went back outside and played the Camouflage Game taught to us by Camp Kawartha and also had some free time to explore in our forest nature area at school. The following day, students completed a reflection describing their experience and why it is important to spend time outside. It was an amazing day that students greatly enjoyed and tied into the curriculum.
