Maple Moon

Landmark 7 (Books, Songs, Games Weekly)

We read “Maple Moon” by Connie Brummel Crook over the course of three days, as it has many words! Reading this story in three parts, gave the students many opportunities to retell, predict, and make connections. “Maple Moon” is the story of a young Mississauga boy. His community is living on the shores of Rice Lake. One winter, the people were very hungry. The boy discovers sweet maple sap by watching a red squirrel and the people were able to survive the winter with this additional food. Since we are tapping some maple trees too, the students noticed that the boy used different tools than we did to collect sap.
