Landmark 11 (Celebrate each Season)
We are working on an inquiry about fall in our classroom. One question the class had was how leaves change colour. We went outside and collected both green and colored leaves from the ground and looked at each one closely. We learned that when the leaves no longer make green chlorophyll you can see the true colours of the leaves We then took the green leaves inside and completed an experiment to extract all of the colours inside the leaf. We crushed the leaves and carefully mixed them with rubbing alcohol. We then left a piece of paper towel dangling in the mixture. After about an hour we could see all of the colours in the leaf soaking into the paper towel. Even though the leaves themselves looked fully dark green, the paper towel showed different shades of green and yellow.
