Building a Nest
Landmark 2 (Animal Friends Monthly)
The children have been watching the progress of a Robin building its nest on the playground structure at our daycare. We first noticed that there were bits of grass and paper littered on the ground under where they were starting to build. This began a conversation about what types of materials birds might find outside to make a nest. Over the last week we have seen the progress of the nest grow and to our surprise after the long weekend we found three small blue eggs inside. We are hopeful we will get to listen for the chips of some baby birds in the coming weeks. We plan on collecting our own nest making materials to invite the children to explore their own building abilities. We notice the Robin doesn’t like to be around when we are playing on the yard and it’s been a great teaching opportunity to respect the land and animals around us.
