Finding Seeds
Landmark 3 (Exercise Senses Daily)
Together as a family we carved a pumpkin outside for Halloween! Our toddler was very engaged putting his hands inside the pumpkin and finding all the seeds. We then roasted them in the oven and had a great snack.

Fuzzy Caterpillar
Landmark 2 (Animal Friends Monthly)
While playing in the front yard our toddler came over to me holding something saying “Pom Pom!” I was curious to see what he found and was surprised he had found a fuzzy caterpillar. We talked about being gentle and how the caterpillar’s home was outside. We put it in a bucket with some leaves and grass and watched it crawl around. We then returned it to where we found it.
Carey Family – October 15, 2022

Brave Seagull
Landmark 2 (Animal Friends Monthly)
We visited Ottawa and while playing at a park our toddler noticed a seagull walking around. He was excited to see the bird and tried running after it. The seagull was pretty brave and our toddler wasn’t quite fast enough to catch up so he and the bird spent about 20 minutes running around together.

Middle Years (6 to 9 years)

Exploring Woodlands
Landmark 9 (Special Outdoor Place 2X/Month)
While visiting family we explored a new woodland. We wanted to make a fire, and found a downed birch tree and pulled off some of the bark. We got distracted by the large tree that had fallen over and pulled up lots of dirt with it’s roots. We had to do some tracking on the way back to find a lost mitt – it was found!
The Walmsley Five – December 29, 2022

Picture Perfect
Landmark 8 (Nature Art Weekly)
Ethan and his mom went around the garden collecting plants for Adventure 4: World of Colour. He was careful not to take too much from each plant. He learned about the different names and then worked together to make an art piece of his family in the backyard.
Jackson Family – September 5, 2022

Planets, Stars and Satellites
Landmark 9 (Special Outdoor Place 2X/Month)
We were able to back-country camp in Kawartha highlands from Saturday- Wednesday with family and friends. We let the kids stay up later and watch the planets, stars and satellites. The kids were able to find Mars as it is a red planet and they also identified a few other stars. It was also very interesting to see Star Link. We had a great discussion about meteors, meteorites, and shooting stars. Headlamps were used to create shadows on the rocks and to tell spooky stories around the campfire.

Shaggy Inkcaps
Landmark 22 (Citizen Science)
One of my favourite things to do with my group here is citizen science! Citizen Science allows us to connect to our world in a productive way. Learning the names and properties of the wild beings that share our home teaches us to appreciate their beauty and their importance. This morning we began “The Great Mushroom Hunt”, which is an effort to create a map of the mushrooms and fungi of North America. How exciting! We first stopped to sketch “Shaggy Inkcaps”, of various sizes. We also found what we think is an entoloma. What I love about this task, which we will carry on for the entirety of the international event, is that we will be learning about our findings together! I know only a small bit about mushrooms, and am looking forward to discovering more with the friends.
Babbling Brook Daycare – September 19, 2022

Nature Walk
Landmark 17 (Three New Outdoor Skills)
For Quest 4 we found all sorts of colours on our nature walk. Sydney cut some of our flowers and made an awesome arrangement and then she taught Leif how to sew using leaves. We were able to get out camping at Rondeau Provincial Park and certainly enjoyed the contrast in colours of the water, beach and sand/rocks.
The Nancekivell Clan – August 8, 2022

Milkweed and Monarchs
Landmark 19 (Explore Biodiversity)
Adventure #8: We looked at pictures of milkweed and discovered several monarch butterflies flying around milkweed plants. The kids talked about the symmetry they saw on the wings and made up stories about what the butterflies would see on their migration journey to Mexico. When we got home, they researched monarchs on Pebble Go and were excited to learn more about the role milkweed plays in the lives of monarchs.
Hipgrave Family – August 30, 2022

Helping the Earth
Landmark 26 (Volunteer in Three Ways)
After a windy week, a lot of garbage has been noticed blowing around town, so the girls decided to use their break to clean it up!! Safety first of course, as they found these extended arms at the Friendly Dollar Store in Lakefield, to use. Don’t want to actually touch any of the garbage!
The Chickadees – Nov 20, 2020

True Wilderness
Landmark #27 (Wilderness Trip)
Quetico is a true wilderness park – campsites and portages are not marked, the lakes are big, and the portages can be rough.
I’d wanted to paddle Quetico for years, but always figured it was too far to drive. But we all decided it WAS worth the drive … and the drive itself was fantastically scenic for the most part..
The Douglas Family – Aug 17/20

Down the rapids
Landmark #27 (Wilderness Trip)
Our family spent a glorious 8 days canoeing through Quetico Provincial Park. Such a great way to recharge the batteries, and we went DAYS without thinking or talking about COVID. Just us, together, with our two canoes, tents, food great sense of adventure.
