Exploring Outdoors
Landmark 1 (Explore Together Weekly)
We have spent this past weekend exploring outside as much as possible. No matter where we go, the kids are always looking for the perfect balance beam to play on. Fallen logs are the top favourite!
The Nature Nuts – April 16, 2022

Swim, Eat and Play
Landmark 4 (Favourite Place Weekly)
We went to the zoo to visit the Polar bears. The polar bears were quite excited to see us and we’re very active while we were there. We sat and observed them for 45 minutes, watching them swim, eat and play. We read about their fur and talked about their habitat. It started to get a little cold out so we sought some warmth at the indoor exhibit where we saw fish, turtles, and many animals from Australia. What a great day.
O’Neill Family – February 27, 2022

Special Treats
Landmark 2 (Animal Friends Monthly)
We got the idea from a social media post and thought we would try it ourselves. The snow was not the best for “baking” but we used our imagination and made a snow mountain instead. We talked about what animals we wanted to leave special treats for, there are cranberries for the chipp2y aka chipmunks, carrots for the squirrels, and seeds for the birds. We hope the animals find our cake delicious and nutritious.

Turtles in Ontario
Landmark 12 (Nearby Plants and Animals)
We are so fortunate to be a part of the Peterborough Water Festival this year. Today, we got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. We learned about species of turtles native to Ontario, and how the OTCC helps to protect Ontario’s turtle species.
Queen Elizabeth Gr 2/3 – May 11, 2022

Climbing Trees
Landmark 9 (Special Outdoor Place 2X/Month)
We made use of a beautiful Easter Monday to explore another new hiking trail. This one had a long washed-out road we had to walk down just to get to the trail. Once in the woods, the kids quickly sourced the best tree for climbing!
The Nature Nuts – April 18, 2022

New Heights
Landmark 9 (Special Outdoor Place 2X/Month)
We discovered a new hiking spot today and had a lot of fun exploring the route. The loop we tried out even had a lookout deck that we stopped at. We’re headed back tomorrow to try one of the other loops.

Magical Chickadees
Landmark 20 (Plan and Conduct a Project)
My son David and myself planned a trip to see if we could feed chickadees. I helped him look up and research the type of food that chickadees eat and I did my own research to see where in the are would be the best spot to have a chance to hand feed the chickadees. We bought the seed and drove the small commute down to Whitby. David was so excited and couldn’t wait to see if he could have a bird land on him. Right away we could hear the chickadees calling to each other in the trees. We were able to have our first chickadee’s eat the seeds from us right at the beginning of the path! It was very exciting and they are so tiny you barely feel them on your hand. We soon figured out that being close to the beginning of the path means there is a lot of foot traffic that could make the chickadee’s not come. We were able to find a nice spot nestled in a bunch of trees that the chickadees loved. They were soon all around us and taking the seeds from our hands. In the end, we stayed and fed the birds for over an hour. It was such a fun adventure!

Skateboarding Skills
Landmark #17 (Three New Outdoor Skills)
These little Chickadees took advantage of this amazing November weather to learn a new skill. Skateboarding at the Lakefield Skate Park is a great place to learn!!
The Chickadees – Nov 6/20

Edible Food
Landmark #18 (Natural Area Booklet, Blog or Video)
We looked around the yard for plants that were edible according to the… book.
Then we made our own reference book with what we found.
Chickadees – August 31/20

Helping the Earth
Landmark 26 (Volunteer in Three Ways)
After a windy week, a lot of garbage has been noticed blowing around town, so the girls decided to use their break to clean it up!! Safety first of course, as they found these extended arms at the Friendly Dollar Store in Lakefield, to use. Don’t want to actually touch any of the garbage!
The Chickadees – Nov 20, 2020

True Wilderness
Landmark #27 (Wilderness Trip)
Quetico is a true wilderness park – campsites and portages are not marked, the lakes are big, and the portages can be rough.
I’d wanted to paddle Quetico for years, but always figured it was too far to drive. But we all decided it WAS worth the drive … and the drive itself was fantastically scenic for the most part..
The Douglas Family – Aug 17/20

Down the rapids
Landmark #27 (Wilderness Trip)
Our family spent a glorious 8 days canoeing through Quetico Provincial Park. Such a great way to recharge the batteries, and we went DAYS without thinking or talking about COVID. Just us, together, with our two canoes, tents, food great sense of adventure.
