Wonderful Winter Walks
Landmark 3 (Exercise Senses Daily)
Hi Pathway! We just wanted to show you our “Nature Trail Back to Daycare”, which we all took home and completed over our winter break. We used our senses daily, visited places around our homes, spotted wild creatures, and enjoyed the world of Winter with our FAMILIES!

Rosy Red Cheeks
Landmark 1 (Explore Together Weekly)
We love to take our time as we venture down our path and today was no exception…we stopped to notice all the sounds of the chickadees and blue jays. We closed our eyes and smiled at the wind who kissed our cheeks rosy red. Our world is an icy, crunchy, sparkly wonderland and there are surprises around every tree.

Hike and Hot Chocolate
Landmark 6 (Play in Nature a Full Hour)
We saw so many birds, danced with the apple tree, investigated the babbling water which we could hear- but not see, tossed snow into the water which made wonderful slush and wandered all the way to the tunnel where we enjoyed a snack and hot chocolate. This was the highlight of my week friends! Thank you for a wonderful hike!

Mother Earth and Me
Landmark 11 (Celebrate each Season)
Today we immersed ourselves in our wonderful trail. We followed rabbit tracks, breathed in deep the smell of cedar, tossed snow into wet ditches to make slush, listened to the birds…we are so lucky we get to visit this space every day to connect with Mother Earth 🌍

Sparkling Snow
Landmark 9 (Special Outdoor Place 2X/Month)
Off we go, on a marvellous adventure! The snow sparkled on our Christmas tree and we pretended to be the bunny who made the prints we found. Hughey accidentally fell into the soft powder as he was jumping which created a wonderful new inquiry. We all laid in the snow-it was so soft and the sky was perfect to look at. “Move your arms and legs!” Brookey said. How delightful! Everyone was so joyful as they made beautiful snow angels. We are investigating all kinds of way we can move in the snow. We checked on the ice rink today but forgot our shovels, which meant we had to use our hands and feet to dig down to the slippery layer. There are just so many things to learn about and do on our trail!

Mollie Harness Pulling and More!
Landmark 14 (Five New Outdoor Activities)
We are really excited to report on our five new winter outdoor activities: ice skating, snow shoeing, fire building, cross country skiing and the most exciting one…Mollie Harness Pulling! It’s really fun to move in the snow in all these different ways. Toddlers and preschoolers can learn new outdoor skills too, and we sure do thrive on a good ski down the trail as we listen to the birds and use new muscles.

Tree Inventory
Landmark 22 (Citizen Science)
Grade 7 and 8 students at three local schools participated in GreenUP’s Urban Forest Program, which included citizen science and action components. First, students practiced identification of local trees then used those skills to complete a tree inventory of their schoolyards. The students completed an inventory of 163 trees! Second, the students recorded their data on the myTree iTree tool, helping them to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide and pollution trees removes from the air, as well as the amount of stormwater run-off they can help mitigate. Finally, their analysis of the local forest provided them with the information needed to select new tree species to plant at their school. Nine medium stature trees were planted.
GreenUP – Nov 2, 2020

Design a Healthy home
Landmark 23 (Design a Healthy Home)
GreenUP’s Girls Climate Leadership Camp participated in a workshop lead by the Endeavour Centre’s Jen Feigin. This workshop focused on healthy and sustainable building techniques and materials. This workshop also highlighted the important role that girls and women can have in industries such as construction, where gender-based discrimination is an ongoing barrier.

Storm Ponds and Plants
Landmark 28 (Help Something Damaged)
We spent the day planting trees and shrubs around the storm water management pond off Marsden Rd in East City Peterborough. Otonabee Conservation taught us now to plant, and explained how storm water management ponds work, and the role of the shrubs in promoting biodiversity, slope stabilization and carbon sequestration.

Planting in Snow
Landmark 28 (Help Something Damaged)
We planted 800 trees all around the banks of the storm water management pond below the Chemong Walmart on the Parkway Greenway trail. The trees will provide habitat, sequester carbon, and stabilize the banks. Otonabee Conservation coordinated our work. Started the day planting in snow, finished in t-shirts!
Youth Leadership in Sustainability – Oct 29, 2020

Tree Planting
Landmark 28 (Help Something Damaged) The YLS class spent the day planting 1,100 trees at gravel pit near Ennismore. The trees are to restore biodiversity, carbon capture and erosion control to this mined-out portion of the gravel pit. White cedar, white spruce, red pine, white pine, balsam fir were planted.
